Semaphor.ai is a Quebec research laboratory which studies traffic phenomena by microsimulation in partnership with research centers and university researchers in Quebec and Europe.

Its goal is to develop practical, economical and efficient traffic control systems by applying rules based on common sense and to transpose them into real life. Among its work, it aims also to measure by microsimulation the impact of heavy transport on the duration of rush hour

Semaphor.ai is also currently developing a system for collecting traffic data using photogrammetric and artificial vision approaches with Laval University, in Québec City, Canada - Centre de recherche endonnées et en intelligence géospatiales (CRDIG). This system improves data accuracy and will opens up new possibilities to better understanding traffic phenomena by microsimulation.

Mathieu Vaudrin is an engineer and has completed a professional master's degree in urban intelligence at Laval University. His master's topic focuses on traffic management during sporting and cultural events (entrance and exit of stadiums). He has  five years  of experience in research, transport system modeling and micro-simulation.

François Vaudrin is a civil engineer and holds a doctoral degree from Laval University. His thesis focuses on traffic light management based on common sense: "A dynamic approach to traffic light management with connected cars". His method is patent pending in North America, Asia and Europe.

In addition, he has over thirty years of experience in transportation management, as well as supervising consulting engineering firms. He planned, prepared, and implemented over $ 100 million in road projects for the Quebec Ministry of Transport. His expertise is recognized and he has collaborated in the review of projects as part of the work of the Charbonneau Commission, in charge of studying the awarding of public contracts in the construction industry in Quebec.

Finally, another interest of the company is also to train the next generation who will address complex problems in a practical way while developing their entrepreneurial spirit.  Its philosophy is to offer exciting projects to its employees to encourage them to develop their full potential.

Sincerely,
Francois Vaudrin
Despite these difficulties, it is possible to do better with current resources. It is possible to propose small improvements that will make a difference at a reasonable cost. The company's research is important to better understand the needs and limitations of current systems in order to develop practical, effective and economical solutions.

Traffic congestion is a significant problem in most major cities. Congestion costs hurt the economy and create pollution. Much hope is placed on new technologies and intelligent transport systems to solve it, but there are few conclusive results.

This problem is growing year by year because the growth of the vehicle fleet is faster than the population. In addition, the infrastructures in place have reached their capacity limit, the cities no longer know how to tackle the problem and the population is becoming impatient. The economic, environmental and health repercussions will be important issues for the coming decades.
